TWO WEEKS BEFORE BREAST AUGMENTATION SURGERY:
- 1. Stop taking aspirin and aspirin containing products.
- 2. Confirm your "pre-op history and physical" appointment with your family doctor/internist.
- 3. If you develop a cold or illness prior to breast enlargement/augmentation surgery, please notify our Baltimore, Maryland area center.
- 4. Vitamins are important in healing. Begin taking multi-vitamins with C, minerals and iron.
- 5. NO SMOKING
- 6. Make certain arrangements have been made to have someone pick you up after surgery and to stay with you during the first 24 hours.
- 7. Stop all herbal and phentermine-type medications as well as supplemental Vitamin E. The small amounts of vitamin E found routinely in standard multivitamins is fine.
TWO DAYS BEFORE BREAST AUGMENTATION SURGERY:
- 1. Go to the drug store and fill all prescriptions.
- 2. Go to the grocery store to buy "light foods" such as juices, tea, soup, toast, crackers, bagels, jelly, etc.
- 3. Buy Betadine™ Scrub liquid soap.
- 4. You may want to purchase a stool softener, such as Colace, as pain medication may cause constipation.
EVENING BEFORE BREAST AUGMENTATION SURGERY:
- 1. Shower with Betadine™ soap for three full minutes. Avoid contact of jewelry with Betadine™; it stains.
- 2. Eat lightly - avoid heavy or gassy foods.
- 3. Get a good night's rest.
- 4. Do not eat or drink anything after 12:00 midnight prior to breast augmentation surgery.
DAY OF BREAST AUGMENTATION SURGERY:
- 1. Do not eat or drink anything prior to surgery. DO NOT SMOKE.
- 2. Shower with Betadine™ for three full minutes. Do not put on any make-up or deodorant after washing.
- 3. Do not wear wigs, hairpins, hairpieces, or jewelry. Dress in loose comfortable clothes. Do not wear pullover tops or panty hose.
- 4. Have someone drive you to your surgery and make certain a responsible adult will be available to take you home and stay with you for 24 hours.
AT HOME AFTER BREAST AUGMENTATION SURGERY:
- 1. After breast augmentation surgery, it is important for you to rest but not to stay in bed. You may lie on your sides or back. While in bed, move your legs and feet to increase the circulation in your legs.
- 2. A small amount of bloody drainage through the bandage is normal.
- 3. For the first 48 hours, keep your arm movements to a minimum. You may brush your hair and teeth. Do not use your arms to support yourself or lift anything heavy. Afterwards, you may begin to increase your arm movement gradually.
- 4. A liquid diet is best for the day of surgery. Begin by taking liquids slowly and progress to light diet as tolerated. You can start with a regular diet the next day.
- 5. Any discomfort should be relieved by pain medication. Take extra-strength Tylenol™ or Ibuprofen (Motrin™/Advil™) regularly to help with general discomfort. You may then take the additional prescribed pain medication as needed.
- 6. It is normal to have pain and swelling after breast augmentation/enlargement surgery. However, call our Baltimore, Maryland area office immediately if the breast swelling feels hard or appears much larger on one side than the other.
OTHER POST-OPERATIVE BREAST AUGMENTATION INSTRUCTIONS:
- 1. You do not need to purchase a "post-op" bra support prior to breast augmentation surgery unless specifically instructed. If so, bring it with you on the day of surgery.
- 2. After surgery, a bra may or may not have been applied. If so, you may remove it to shower daily beginning on the third day after breast augmentation surgery. Do not remove the plastic bandage over your incisions. Place the bra back on after showering. The bra should be worn at all times, including sleep, for two weeks. If you were not placed into your bra at the time of surgery, do not worry and do not put the bra on. You may shower as instructed above.
- 3. Initially your breast implants will appear too “high.” This will correct itself as the breast stretches and the implant settles into place. This can easily take three to four weeks.
GENERAL INFORMATION:
- 1. Bruising and swelling is expected after breast augmentation surgery. This will disappear with time. Be patient. It takes three months for breasts to regain their softness and natural appearance.
- 2. Spotty areas of numbness are common and may last six weeks to six months. Avoid underwire bras until good feeling has returned.
- 3. Feelings of sharpness, burning and other sensations are common during the healing process.
- 4. You may drive after one week provided you are comfortable enough to stop in an emergency.
