At our skin care center located near Baltimore, Maryland, Dr. Schuster and his staff have provided healthy, radiant skin to many people who have suffered from various pigment related disorders. Skin color is the result of melanin. Melanin is a pigmented chemical produced by melanocytes which are cells found in the bottom layer of the epidermis. After the melanin is made, it is passed or transferred into neighboring skin cells. Melanin helps protect the skin by absorbing ultraviolet radiation. “Tanning” is a response of the skin to ultraviolet radiation exposure. The ultraviolet radiation causes an increased production of the melanin. When there are problems with the production, transfer, or breakdown of melanin, irregularities of pigmentation occur. Melasma is a condition, seen most often during pregnancies or with use of oral contraceptives, where large, “mask like” patches of darkening appear on the face. “Sun spots” are the result of too many melanocytes and too much melanin. Sometimes the skin will react to trauma or inflammation by becoming darker. This is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
In treating pigmentation problems, Dr. Schuster and the aestheticians at Face Appeal offer a number of skin care options to residents of Baltimore and other Maryland cities. Often, treatment involves a combination of sunscreens and avoidance of sun exposure. Bleaching creams and skin care products containing retinoids can also be very helpful. Bleaching creams work on the chemical pathways which produce melanin. Hydroquinones are the most common types of bleaching agents and vary in their strength by percentage. The higher the percentage, the stronger they are. The higher percentage hydroquinones are generally supplied from physicians by prescription. Epiquin® is a product that combines both a hydroquinone and retinol in a “microsphere” delivery system. This allows for a more gradual prolonged exposure to the medicines and causes less irritation. The results are very satisfying. Finally, chemical peels, intense pulsed light (IPL™) and laser resurfacing are very effective procedures and are used to strip off the discolored, abnormally pigmented skin. A consultation with Dr. Schuster or one of the aestheticians at Face Appeal can help you determine which treatment would be best for you.
Dr. Schuster and his staff are committed to helping people look their best through premium skin care services. If you live in Baltimore or the surrounding areas in Maryland and would like to schedule an appointment, please contact us today.
