Information on Sunscreen and Skin Care – Baltimore, Maryland

Along with advanced skin care treatments such as chemical peels, laser resurfacing, and BOTOX® injections, utilizing sunscreen is essential to helping you maintain a healthy, youthful glow as you age. The skin care experts at Face Appeal near Baltimore, Maryland can help you select a sunscreen product designed to protect your unique skin type against the harmful effects of the sun. Read on to learn about various types of sunscreen and how they can minimize aging of the skin caused by exposure to the sun.

The Importance of Sunscreen in Your Skin Care Regimen

In addition to light and heat, the sun brings with it many harmful things. Ultraviolet radiation is light energy that cannot be seen but is very powerful. Ultraviolet radiation is responsible for the gradual breakdown of the skin.   It affects the surface cells, dermis, connective tissue and blood vessels. Ultraviolet radiation is commonly separated into UVA and UVB light. While unprotected exposure to either one is bad for you, UVA is the one that is the most harmful and has been shown to be most closely associated with skin cancers. UVB is the radiation that is most responsible for tanning and early sunburn.

Sunscreens are products that are designed to block out ultraviolet radiation. Some work only on UVA or UVB, while a few will work on both. “Barrier” sunscreens such as Zinc oxide and Titanium oxide work on both: they scatter or reflect the radiation. In recent years, new preparations have made the products easier to use. I recommend using these products when a longer period of intense sun exposure is anticipated, such as during outdoors sports, or beach and pool activities.

UVB sunscreens are the type most commonly used. Their Sun Protective Factor, or SPF, measures their effectiveness. Para-Aminobenzoic acid (PABA), cinnamates and salicylates are the most common active ingredients in UVB sunscreens. There are not very many UVA sunscreens approved for use in the United States. Parsol 1789 is approved and effective against UVA. Remember that whatever sunscreen you use will only be effective if applied correctly. This means it should be applied liberally, generously, and regularly. Since your face is constantly being exposed to sunlight, we recommend that you include a good facial sunscreen as part of a comprehensive skin care program. The aestheticians at Face Appeal in the Baltimore, Maryland area are very knowledgeable and can help you to choose the right sunscreen for your skin type. Dr. Schuster also offers advanced treatments, such as IPL™ facial rejuvenation and Restylane® injections, to leave your skin looking smoother, fuller, and more radiant.
